Mannheim Steamroller is known for its modern recreations of Christmas music. The group mixes classical, rock, progressive, and elements of new age music to produce Christmas songs that sound more relevant to our times. Some of their fan favorites are “Deck the Halls,” “Carol of the Bell,” and “Stille Nacht (Silent Night).”
The group was founded in 1974 by Chip Davis, a percussionist and Grammy-Award-winning composer who originated in Ohio. Today, the group is based in Omaha, Nebraska, with 28 members, including Davis. The group sets out on the Christmas Tour this holiday season, which will uplift the holiday traditions with a modern twist. Mannheim Steamroller is expected to cover songs from their 25 Christmas albums, most of which topped the New Age and Holiday Albums charts. Aside from dominating their niche charts, Mannheim Steamroller also performs impressively on the Billboard 200.
In 1984, the group dropped their first Christmas album, Christmas, peaking on the Billboard 200 chart at number 50. The album later sold more than six million copies in the U.S., earning six-time platinum status. Mannheim Steamroller released their highest charting Christmas album, Christmas in the Aire, in 1995. The album peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200 and topped the New Age and Christmas Albums charts.
Apart from Christmas albums, Mannheim Steamroller has released 12 non-holiday-themed studio albums. Their first seven albums from the Fresh Aire series earned gold in the U.S. Their 1990 album, Fresh Aire 7, became their highest charting non-holiday album, peaking at number 2 on the New Age Albums chart and number 77 on the Billboard 200.
