Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is, originally, a 1937 American animated musical fantasy film, and was based on the 1812 German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. It was a full-length traditionally animated feature film and has, since its original release, been critically acclaimed and is a huge commercial success. Snow White originally premiered in Los Angeles, California in December 1937. It was nominated for Best Musical Score at the Academy Awards in 1938, and the following year, the producer, Walt Disney, was awarded an honorary Oscar for the film. This honorary award was unique, in that it consisted of one normal-sized Oscar, as well as seven miniature Oscar statuettes.
Snow White is a princess living with her wicked stepmother, the Queen, having lost both of her parents at a young age. The Queen forces Snow White to work as a scullery maid and, daily, asks her Magic Mirror "who is the fairest one of all." And every single day, for year upon year, the mirror has answered that the Queen is. However, one day, Snow White meets and falls in love with a prince. On that day, the Magic Mirror told the Queen that Snow White was now the fairest in all the land. Angered by this, the Queen orders her Huntsman to take Snow White into the forest, to kill her. But, the Huntsman cannot bring himself to kill Snow White, and urges her to flee into the woods and never return…
Snow White is lost and frightened in the woods, and is befriended by the woodland animals, who show her a cottage deep in the woods. There are seven small chairs in the dining room, so Snow White assumes the cottage is the untidy home of seven orphaned children. With help from the animals, she cleans and tidy’s the cottage, and cooks a meal. On returning home, Snow White soon learns that the cottage is actually the home of seven dwarfs who work in a nearby mine! They are alarmed, as Snow White introduces herself, and offers to clean and cook for them.
Back at the castle, the Magic Mirror tells the Queen that Snow White is still alive and living with the Dwarfs. The Queen makes a poisoned apple designed to put whoever eats it, into a death-like sleep, and disguised as a rotten old hag, the Queen goes to the cottage. While the dwarfs are away, she convinces Snow White to bite the apple, and immediately Snow White falls into a death-like slumber.
When the dwarfs return to their cottage, they find Snow White fast asleep. No wanting to bury her in the ground, they place her into a glass coffin, in the forest. A year later, after an endless search, the prince finally hears of Snow White's eternal sleep and visits the coffin… the rest, they say, is lost to history… or is it?
